Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Older plumbing and older water heaters do not always share the same age. Half the homes in Grundy County, Missouri were built in 1963 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house that has stood that long has often had its water heater swapped out more than once, but the fixtures and supply lines surrounding it belong to the original build, and a contractor opening the unit works around both. The harder question on a repair call is whether the replacement components a system of that era takes are still in production, because some are not, and that answer changes what gets ordered and what gets quoted.

The Parts of a Water Heater a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small single-story house showing interior rooms with sinks, a toilet, furniture and a tall cylindrical water heater with a flue pipe extending through the dark shingled roof.

The tank is the piece a homeowner notices first, a large insulated cylinder sitting in a utility room, basement, or garage, and its job is to hold water at a set temperature ready for use. The burner assembly or heating element sits at or near the base of the tank and is what actually raises that temperature. When a water heater fails to produce hot water or produces it inconsistently, these are where a contractor looks first.

The thermostat mounts against the tank or inside its housing and tells the heating element when to run. The pressure relief valve sits on the side of the tank and is a safety device that releases if pressure inside climbs too high. The anode rod runs down through the tank interior and slows corrosion of the tank wall from the inside out.
