Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Half the homes in Worth County, Missouri were built in 1961 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A water heater sitting in a house that old was almost certainly installed years after the house went up, into plumbing that was not originally designed around it. When something fails, what a contractor finds once the unit is open decides the rest of the job: if the parts that failed are still manufactured, the repair is straightforward. If they are not, the question shifts to whether the existing supply lines and venting will accept a different unit without a full rework of what surrounds it.

The Parts of a Water Heater a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with plumbing fixtures, a cylindrical water heater and a vertical vent pipe extending through the roof.

The tank is what most homeowners see: a tall cylinder standing in the basement, utility closet, or garage, holding a supply of water at a set temperature. The burner or heating element sits at the base or inside the tank and does the actual heating. When a water heater stops producing hot water or produces less of it, those two pieces are where a contractor looks first.

The thermostat mounts on the outside of the tank or inside the access panel and tells the heating source when to fire and when to stop. The pressure relief valve sits on the side of the tank and opens automatically if pressure or temperature climbs too high. The anode rod runs down through the top of the tank and draws corrosion to itself rather than to the tank walls, so its condition tells a contractor a lot about what else may be wearing.

The drawing shows the general layout of a water heater, and a licensed contractor determines which parts apply to the specific unit and setup in your home.
